Mission:Erebus Part III

Postby iamdavidbyrne » Tue Dec 09, 2008 1:18 pm

Sorry for the delay in the next installment. I have been crazy busy with work and then finally took my first vacation for 2008. Did a good job of recharging the batteries. Here is the next installment of Mission: Erebus...

INT. COMMUNICATIONS DECK - DAY

Daniels is sitting in the communication deck. He stands up
and walks towards an observation window. He puts his hands
on the glass and leans into the window and stares out into
the infinite space and towards the fast approaching Erebus.

The door behind him slides open.

Beatrice walks into the room as the doors behind her close
shut. She still looks upset.

Daniels continues to stare into space.

DANIELS
Beatrice.

BEATRICE
I will apologize for my actions
earlier, but I would like for it to
be known that I still do not
condone or support this mission.

DANIELS
That's fair enough.

BEATRICE
Can you even look at me when you
say that.

Daniels turns around and folds his arms over his chest and
leans back against the glass.

BEATRICE (cont'd)
Thank you. Now can you really sit
there and tell me that you really
think this mission is in the crew's
best interest.

DANIELS
As I stated before, this is the
mission of the ship, and therefore
it is in the crew's best interest
no matter whether they fully agree
with it or not.

BEATRICE
Can you tell me then why. Why
Erebus?

Daniels stares at her for a moment and then walks past her
and towards the doors.

BEATRICE (cont'd)
Can you not even give me a simple
answer.

He keeps walking as the doors slide open and then shut
leaving Beatrice alone in the communication deck.

INT. AENEID - DAY

Daniels continues to walk back towards the meal hall as
Beatrice comes quickly walking out of the communication deck.

She walks faster and brushes past Daniels.

BEATRICE
You sometimes can be a real jerk.

She hurries past him.

Daniels actually manages to look concerned, but his concern
quickly fades away and he keeps walking.

He turns the corner and has reached the mess hall. He enters
through another set of sliding doors.

INT. MEAL HALL - DAY

Daniels walks into the meal hall. Beatrice is pulling up a
seat at the table.

The rest of the crew is present. Jay, who looks tired,
Lanet, and Tank.

Four other members are present that make up the entire crew
of the Aeneid.

RICHARD is leaning up against the back wall. He is the chief
engineer. A white male in his early forties.
He has a cleaner looking demeanor with almost perfectly cut
hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He is wearing the same
style of clothes as everybody else, but he comes across more
clean and crisp.

SAWYER is sitting with his feet propped up on the table. He
is the equipment specialist. He is a white male in his late
thirties. He keeps his hair closely shaved, and has tribal
tatoos up and down his arms.

GAYLE is also sitting at the table. She is the onboard
doctor. She is in her mid to late thirties with short blonde
hair.

CHO walks out of the kitchen and towards the table. He is
the onboard cook. He is an Asian male in his early thirties.
He keeps his hair long and in a tight ponytail.

Cho throws down a couple of bowls of food. It is not the
most appealing looking food, but the group makes no
complaints and they grab the bowls.

Daniels steps up to the table, picks up a bowl, looks at the
food, and puts it back on the table.

DANIELS
All right, everybody gather up.

The crew makes their way up to the table and they all sit
down.

DANIELS (cont'd)
If you have not heard already, but
I am sure you all have. We are on
course to the planet Erebus. The
Aeneid has been commissioned by
military under the orders of
General Erickson to touchdown on
the surface. From there we will
collect our cargo, refuel, and
return to X to finish our good
faith work.

TANK
What is the cargo?

Daniels takes a deep breath.

DANIELS
For the past month, a top secret
war has been waging on Erebus over
the rights to use the native fuel,
DyOx. Our cargo is the collection
of all dead bodies.

BEATRICE
Are you kidding me. There is not
way this ship is picking up dead
bodies.

LANET
How many dead bodies are we talking
about.

DANIELS
I am not positive of the number,
but intelligence believes it is all
of them.

GAYLE
Any survivors?

DANIELS
Not that I am aware.

SAWYER
Damn, all of them? That could mean
a body count in the hundreds...
hell, we could possibly be taking
about thousands.

DANIELS
Whatever the body count, we will
not leave till we complete our
mission.

RICHARD
Well here is an interesting
observation... since we are
predicting a possible body count in
the thousands, do we know what
killed them all because quite
frankly I would like to make sure
we all don't die of the same
causes.

DANIELS
That information was classified.

RICHARD
Well do we know what we are doing
with the bodies once we get them on
the ship.

DANIELS
We will be taking them to the
Planet X where they will be
incinerated.

BEATRICE
We can't just incinerate them.
These are actual human beings with
families and loved ones. Shouldn't
we be taking the bodies back to
Earth for burials.

DANIELS
As stated, the mission of the
Aeneid is to collect all dead
bodies and bring them to X. You
will all be adequately paid for
your work.

It is easy to see that Beatrice is upset. It is hard to
judge the rest of the crew's general thoughts about the
mission. Some look disturbed by the idea while others look
complacent.

DANIELS (cont'd)
(interrupting the silence)
Lanet, how much longer till we
touchdown.

LANET
We've got probably close to three
hours.

DANIELS
Thank you, Lanet. Right now I
suggest that everyone take the rest
of the time getting ready.
Conserve your energy. Cho, can you
prepare a meal for the crew.

Cho nods his head.

DANIELS (cont'd)
We will reconvene in the loading
station in three hours. See you
all then. Dismissed.

Jay jumps up first and quickly heads for the door.

JAY
I'm catching some zzz's.

Cho disappears back into the kitchen. The rest of the crew
except for Beatrice slowly file out of the mess hall.

Beatrice remains sitting. She has her arms crossed over her
chest and is now leaning back. Her glare is of pure anger
and it's locked on Captain Daniels. Quickly they are the
only two left.

BEATRICE
Can you even tell us why?

DANIELS
The crew doesn't need to know why.

BEATRICE
Don't be so arrogant. The men and
women of this crew are some of the
best on Earth. It is unfair to
misjudge them or to treat them
unfairly. They work just as hard
for you, and have the same
problems, you face.

DANIELS
Their problems are not my problems.

BEATRICE
You are just as bad as General
Erickson.

Daniel quickly rushes up to the table and puts his fist down
and leans in towards Beatrice.

DANIELS
I am not like Erickson.

BEATRICE
I see I touched a nerve.

Daniels realized his reaction and lets up and tries to calm
himself back down.

DANIELS
(sounding almost defeated)
I had no other choice.

BEATRICE
We all have choices.

DANIELS
Not me. Not with this one.

BEATRICE
Why can't you tell me?

Daniels falls slowly into the chair. He stares blankly at
the table ahead of him. He takes a deep breath and looks up
at Beatrice.

DANIELS
My son. If I did not take this
mission, I was going to lose my
son. I can't lost him... I can't.
He is all I have left. It stops
here. After Erebus and X, I'm
done. I'm going to take the money
and start things over and makes
things right.

Beatrice cannot say anything, but can only stare at a broken
man.

Daniels gets up quietly.

DANIELS (cont'd)
(not making eye contact)
See you in three hours.

Daniels walks away quietly and through the sliding doors.

INT. AENEID - DAY

Daniels walks the maze of tunnels through the ship back to
his quarters.

INT. CAPTAINS'S QUARTERS - DAY

Daniels walks into the room and steps towards the center of
the room. He slams his first down onto the table.

He starts angrily throwing things and pushing things off of
the tables and shelves. His intensity grows fierce.

He punches the wall, and then yells loudly.

He then falls into a chair and hangs his head.

FADE OUT:

EXT. EREBUS - DAY

Day has finally broken on the surface of Erebus.

Daniels is awakened by voices of a rescue crew coming from
his radio.

RESCUE CREW (O.C.)
...We have your coordinates. We
are on the way.

Daniels remains passed out with Roger's lifeless body laying
next to his.

He head slowly rolls and nods. He blinks his eyes and starts
to pull himself up.

He manages to stand up, and starts hobbling forward and in a
direction away from Roger.

He keeps moving away. He looks up to the sky and sees a
rescue helicopter coming to get him and pick up Roger.

His radio goes off again.

RESCUE CREW (O.C.) (cont'd)
We have visual on the two soldiers.
Where is the downed soldier?

Daniels stops walking.

DANIELS
What are you talking about? He's
right...

Daniels turns back where Roger's body was laying, but Roger
is no longer on the ground. Roger with a crazed look in his
eyes is charging quickly towards Daniels.

Roger lunges towards Daniels clawing at his chest with a
rabid force clawing deep into his skin.

Daniels manages to side step him, and sends Roger to the
ground.

Roger unnaturally jumps back up and charges towards Daniels
again.

Out of militaristic instinct, Daniels pulls out his gun and
shoots at Rogers but aims to his side.

CLOSE UP OF THE BULLET

The bullet flies towards Roger's side and makes direct
contact with a grenade on Roger's side.

EXT. EREBUS - DAY

The grenade explodes annihilating Roger's remains and sends
Daniels flying back.

INT HELICOPTER - DAY

From the helicopter pilot's perspective it easy to see the
fire engulfed around Roger and Daniels laying on the ground.

RESCUE CREW
Shots fired. Shots fired. We have
a soldier down. Repeat. We have a
soldier down.

EXT. EREBUS - DAY

The helicopter has landed, and the pilots are now on the
ground with their guns drawn.

They are yelling at Daniels who is now on his knees.

He slowly raises his hands and puts them behind his head.
One of the pilots approaches Daniels as he closes eyes.

INT. CAPTAINS'S QUARTERS - DAY

Lanet's voice comes up from a group of speakers.

LANET (O.C.)
Captain Daniels.

She wakes Daniels out of his thoughts. He leans down and
presses a button.

DANIELS
It's Daniels.

LANET (O.C.)
We're making our final descent.

DANIELS
I'm on my way.

Daniels takes a moment to gather himself and then heads out
of his room.

INT. NAVAGATIONAL DECK - DAY

Daniels walks into the navagational deck. Lanet is in the
command chair getting the Aeneid ready for landing.

Richard is standing on her right side watching their
progress.

Daniels approaches them and stand on the left side of Lanet
and folds his arms over his chest.

He nods in acknowledgement and stars straight ahead.

LANET
(shaking her head)
That can't be.

RICHARD
God help us all.

EXT. EREBUS - DAY

It is easy to see from the sky the sheer mass of bodies
spread over the area.

The Aeneid levels out and makes a perfectly horizontal
descent to the surface.

The landing gear slides out and makes contact with the
ground.

From where the ship lands, dead bodies can be seen in every
direction.

A series of DyOx rigs and fueling stations are stationed
about a half a mile from the ship.

INT. EREBUS - DAY

Lanet and Richard continue to stare straight ahead in
bewilderment.

Beatrice walks in and without saying a word looks out the
window.

DANIELS
(quietly)
Everybody suit up. We're on the
ground in five.

He turns away from the group and heads out towards the
loading station.

Beatrice turns and watches as Daniels walks out of the room.
She turns to Lanet.

BEATRICE
Lanet, how long have you been with
Captain Daniels?

LANET
I've been with Daniels for about
ten years now.

BEATRICE
What happened to him on those first
trips to Erebus.

LANET
I don't talk about those days
anymore.

BEATRICE
Why won't you talk about it?

LANET
Those days are long gone now and it
does no good discussing them
anymore.

BEATRICE
What's everybody hiding from?

LANET
I'm not hiding from nothing.

Richard leans in towards the two like he is going to tell a
secret.

RICHARD
(whispering)
He went crazy.

He leans back up.

RICHARD (cont'd)
...Or that's at least what the
courts decided.

BEATRICE
What do you mean he went crazy?

RICHARD
Why do you think a man who could
have easily been a five star
general is the captain of a cargo
ship. Before serving as Captain of
the Aeneid, he spent five years in
a psychiatric ward, and after that
the military would have nothing to
do with him.

LANET
And like I said, that was then and
this is now, so it does no good
talking about it.

BEATRICE
But, why was he put in a
psychiatric ward.

RICHARD
He killed a man. Well... actually
according to his testimony he
didn't kill a man. Daniels said he
was already dead, but their were
two medical rescue pilots who
witnessed the whole thing. The
courts deemed it temporary
insanity, and sentenced him to five
years.

LANET
(staring at Richard)
If you can excuse me... the Captain
gave us an order.

She walks past them still staring at Richard.

LANET (cont'd)
See you on the ground.

Richard steps closer to Beatrice, and puts his hand on her
shoulder.

RICHARD
You know it's really nice to have
you on board. I'd be happy to get
you more acquainted with the ship.

Beatrice looks over at his hand and has a slight look of
disgust. She picks up his hand and pushes it away.

She turns around and walks way. The sliding doors open and
shes walks out leaving Richard by himself.

INT. LOADING STATION - DAY

Beatrice walks into the loading station. The rest of the
crew, except Richard has assembled on the dock. Each member
is gearing up in military suits.

The loading station is full of all sorts of equipment.
Everything from space suits, tools, to even small bull dozers
and cranes. Connected to the loading dock are the cargo
holding areas. These areas are massive, two story areas
connected by steps and ladders.

Tank and Sawyer are already in their gear. They have walked
over to a series of small bull dozers with a loading bed on
the back.

Beatrice begins getting dressed quickly.

Daniels walks over to her.

DANIELS
Hey...

She keeps getting dressed.

DANIELS (cont'd)
I wanted to apologize for my
actions earlier. I've been under a
lot of stress and I... well... I'm
sorry for getting you and the crew
mixed up in all of this. Once we
get this mission over with, I'll be
out of your hands.

He extends his hand which she looks at for a second and then
shakes it with an affirming grip.

DANIELS (cont'd)
Good.

He turns towards the rest of the crew. Richard just walks in
at this moment.

DANIELS (cont'd)
All right. You know why we are
here. From the looks of things
outside, I am giving ourselves two
days to complete this phase of the
mission. We will work for the
remainder of the sunlight today,
and we will be back at it with the
first ray of light tomorrow. We
won't leave till every single body
has been picked up and loaded onto
the ship. Is that clear?

CREW
Yes, sir.

DANIELS
Sawyer and Tank are going to man
the Cats. Lanet and Richard will
take the trucks.

JAY
What do I get to do?

DANIELS
The remainder of you will be on
body detail. We will gather the
bodies into central locations for
the trucks and Cats to pick up. Is
that clear?

CREW
Yes, sir.

DANIELS
Open the loading bay doors.

Jay pulls a switch and the hull of the loading dock slowly
descends to the ground.

Lanet and Richard get into their trucks.
