It's Potassium Iodide (Ki), and if you get more than a few hundred rads of radiation, drink it. Seriously. It tastes like crap, but it's better than glowing. The Ki goes straight to your thyroid and fills it with non-radioactive iodine to keep out the radioactive iodine (WTF? Exactly.) Here's a link to the CDC- http://www.bt.cdc.gov/radiation/ki.asp

on the same theme, how does one effectively filter radiation from the air (in ones survival bunker.... obviously)?

Is it simply a matter of filtering out radioactive dust.... meaning that a simple filter system would suffice, or is there more to it?

Just a thought on the occaisional spambot that seems to invade this site

Another site that I visit must aprove the first five posts of new members.. I realise this would cause more work for allready over worked mods, but it seems to be a pretty good solution...

We'll take the idea under advisement wa5, thanks. I sometimes forget to delete those posts but I'll try to keep on it from now on.
Nuke the site from orbit... it's the only way to be sure.

I just read the report on "Babylon 2084" and it reminded me of a serialised story from my States school magazine.. this was from the New South Wales Education Department in the mid 70s (I was very fortunate, in that there were a lot of PA stories in my school magazine... if its editor is still kicking, I feel sure they would be on this site somewhere, Thankyou.).
Anyways, the story in Question was called, "The Zero People" and was about a group of people who live in luxury in a tower, but never venture below the 50th floor, watched over by a computer/ Artificial Intelligence. They have lost touch with the ground dwellers (ground being Zero floor, thus Zero People) and they fear them, the only pictures they have show figures with hideously distorted heads.

A couple of kids end up on the ground, and find out that the people are no different to them, the deformation turns out to be a gas mask, as the air is massively polluted, due to the power needs of the computer/ AI.
The AI is going mad and plans to remove the unused lower 50 floors of the tower to build a new tower for the ground people, as a reward for continueing to power it...

Unfortunately I cant remember the rest of the book, but they undoubtadly win in the end....

I've never heard of that story before. It sounds really good.

Part of the story remind me of different things i've read in the past.

The tower run by A.I. reminds me a bit of the manga "Hotel" which was very good. And very short. You can read it here, if you are interested:

http://read.homeunix.com/onlinereading/ ... e_nas.html

It also kind of reminds me of the book "Level 7" where you have military personnel on levels 6 and 7 of an underground bunker. Civilians live on levels 1-5. And they never see each other.

it was very much a kids book.
Not PA, but A/I and tower related, "The Gridiron" about a super computer that runs every facet of a skyscrapers' operation. The computer program/intelligence gets infected by a childs shoot em up game during a reboot. and sets about killing the inhabitants of the building.

Dude, that sounds freaking awesome. I am going to have to see if I can find a copy.

On a side note, what is up with that dust storm in Sydney? I saw some photos of it. It looked straight up post apocalyptic.
